The Fender Musical Instruments Corporation, initially named the Fender Electric Instrument Manufacturing Company, was started by Leo Fender in 1946, making this year their diamond aniversary. Fender is particularly important because of its role in bringing solidbody electric guitars to the masses. Fender offered the first mass-produced solid-body Spanish-style electric guitar. This invention started off new trends in blues and rock.
Recently thousands of friends, family and fans packed Fender’s spectacular 60th Anniversary concert bash at the Tempe Music Festival, March 31-April 1 at Tempe Beach Park in (mostly) sunny Tempe, Ariz. Performers included Jeff Beck and the John Mayer Trio .

She originally hails from Jozi, but moved to Cape Town for Seether House High School, where she learnt the ins and outs of House Music. It was only one lonely day when she searched for her school on google, when she discovered a gr8 SA band and how Rock music can change your life. She hasn't looked back since.

Her hobbies include crashing digs parties, winning wet T-shirt competitions, long sunset walks on the beach, and competing in Tiddlywink competitions. She is Known by her tiddlywink team mates as, "Thumby Thumbs McGraw."

Nirvana Nevermind

Nevermind catapulted Nirvana from relative obscurity to the heights of commercial and critical success virtually overnight. It radically altered the musical landscape, shifting the focus away from the hair metal of the 1980s, and giving rise to the Seattle, Washington-based grunge movement which dominated the first few years of the 1990s. Nevermind was certified gold and platinum by the RIAA on November 27, 1991.

The now-legendary Nevermind cover shows a baby swimming toward a bill on a fishhook. In the 1980s, popular rock diversified. The early part of the decade saw Eddie Van Halen achieve musical innovations in rock guitar, while vocalists David Lee Roth (of Van Halen) and Freddie Mercury (of Queen as he had been doing throughout the 1970's) raised the role of frontman to near performance art standards.
Heavy metal languished in obscurity until the mid- or late 1970s. A few hard rock bands maintained large followings, like Queen, AC/DC, Led Zeppelin and Aerosmith, and there were occasional mainstream hits, like Blue Öyster Cult's "Don't Fear the Reaper". Music critics overwhelmingly hated the genre, and mainstream listeners generally avoided it because of its strangeness. However this changed in 1978 with the release of the hard rock band Van Halen's eponymous debut, which ushered in an era of widely popular, high-energy rock and roll, based out of Los Angeles, California.

Featured Band: Lacuna Coil
Lacuna Coil is an Italian gothic metal band formed in Milan, Italy, in 1996. They were formerly known as Sleep of Right and Ethereal.
Lacuna Coil's music is inspired by gothic imagery, using melodic guitar lines, alternating heavy and light vocals, and a bit of pop influence. According to themselves, the band is influenced by Paradise Lost, Tiamat, Septic Flesh and Type O Negative, among others.
The band formed as Sleep of Right in 1994, but soon changed their name to Ethereal, and were signed by Century Media at the end of 1997. Finding that the name Ethereal was already taken, they settled instead on Lacuna Coil (which means empty spiral).

Moshing is a type of dance characterized by jumping around and or pushing others to loud punk, hardcore, and heavy metal music. Moshing is popular with many, especially young, fans. Moshing is also gaining popularity in the Rap and Breakcore (a genre of extreme electronic dance music) scenes.
Moshing is typically done in a mosh pit or circle pit. Originally this was just a group of people typically directly in front of the stage who were engaged in this form of dancing. It is now more frequent that there are mosh or circle pits throughout the entire audience.
Mosh fashion relates to the music genre. Specifically, it began with wearing what one would wear to a concert where there would be a mosh pit.

Interview
LP Show, a Cape Town based 4 - piece founded 5 years ago by lead singer and surfmeister Galen Hossack.

Geoff Adams, drummer, is the only other remaining member of the original band, having gone through the usual recruitment process to end up with the current line-up. They started off playing what they now nostalgically refer to as melodic punk – their first album, Joe Soap the First, was released in 2001.

Not keen to fit into any easily defined pigeonholes though, they kept on experimenting and came up with a hybrid of drum ‘n bass and punk for the second album, Shouting From The Rails. Next came Krazy is Kareeokee, which similarly was made up of a variety of styles and influences. Playing live shows with a combination of tracks from these two albums is what set LPShow apart from anything the CT scene had experienced before, and incorporating synchronised music videos and Geoff and Galen’s chronic onstage antics, they quickly built a loyal and enthusiastic following. Word of the outfit spread like a CT mountain fire and in no time teenage girls were shouting “We Love LPShow” in their sleep.

Their most recent release, Wut Is Dis, is a similar hybrid of styles, although it veers closest to progressive surf rock/punk. It’s hybrid rock!

The Beams started in early 2005 by fellow University of Cape Town students, Amrik Cooper and Bosko Popovac through a common love of 80s British Rock (The Smiths, Stone Roses, Joy Division, etc...). After a few line up changes and a year of honing material and polishing their act, The Beams have hit Cape Town's live music venues, thrilling audiences with their infectious grooves.

The Smashing Pumpkins are a popular and acclaimed American alternative rock band which formed in Chicago, Illinois in 1988.
